Dr. Bibekanand Mallick is a researcher in bioinformatics at Wadsworth Center, New York State Department of Health, New York, USA. He completed his Ph D from Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science (IACS), Kolkata and M. This is a nice book for the medium-advanced student in finance - and definitely a good refresher for the practitioners of the international corporate finance. H. James Dallas has done more than written a book chockablock with practical wisdom. He’s given us a front-row seat on an executive’s road trip through the often-muddy terrain of corporate change. It’s a bumpy, funny, exhilarating ride, and one that he’s navigated artfully, and with spirit.

Mastering the Challenges of Leading Change gives us a first-hand look at a senior executive’s experiences with large-scale corporate transformation. (Full disclosure: I met James at a conference and practically hurled myself at him, subsequently profiling him in my book, The New IT: How Technology Leaders Enable Business Strategy in the Digital Age.) Dallas brilliantly structures the book in four parts:

Part I: Priorities, in which he lays out executives can become distracted by not outlining their priorities, coloring in some of the most important culprits (both people and habits) that can trip us up.
Part II: Politics, in which he promotes the skills and behaviors necessary—some of them difficult, some of them downright unpleasant, all of them necessary—for propelling change.
Part III: People, where Dallas’ genuine gifts shine through, and where we learn techniques for enlisting and engaging players up and down the corporate hierarchy to maximize value while engendering trust.
Part IV: Perseverance, where Dallas’ leadership skills shine through and we learn not only how to succeed at driving change, but how to sustain that change through ongoing dialog and inclusive management practices.

Though most of Dallas’ stories revolve around his executive roles at Georgia Pacific and Medtronic (both of them Fortune 500 companies), Mastering the Challenges of Leading Change offers its author’s wisdom to managers at medium-sized businesses, too. The successes and failures Dallas shares with readers transcend revenue size and market share. They all have leadership at their centers.

In addition to dripping with Dallas’ insights and humanity, the book’s structure makes it not only a pleasure to read, but an effective reference. It highlights key takeaways, making it easy for the reader to re-reference important sections and underline resonant points. The “Coaching Moments” section at the conclusion of every chapter represents a helpful self-assessment for readers. And I wish I’d thought of the “chapter in tweets” idea, which boils down Dallas’ experience—an ambitious undertaking, to say the least!—into 140 characters or less.

This isn’t your typical management book on driving and sustaining corporate change, with citations of academic research and inch-deep observations based on anecdotal conversations with others. Dallas has lived a fascinating life, learned some high-impact lessons, and applied them with grace and humor to the workplace. He illustrates what success looks like from the ground up, with deliberate and earnest attention. Which is exactly how you should read this book.

An interesting mix of theory and practical advice for all executives and from someone who has earned his stripes achieving more than most can imagine. James' writing made me reconsider my experiences, provoked thoughts of ways to improve our change initiatives/integration programs and provided many specific actions we can employ to enhance value for employees and customers. His customer oriented perspective, attention to operational details and ways to implement them seem very sound and are not complicated. I especially liked the short "tweets" at the end of each chapter and the 5 or so questions to ponder for implementations you may be involved in achieving. Sounds like he owes much to his grandmothers advice. I liked the book so much I am buying copies for my entire team. Buy this now before you miss the opportunity to use James advice in your currents challenges.

A Systemic Process on Leading Change

I always enjoy reading from those who have been there and done that, rather than from a researcher writing about how some companies change. In this book, James Dallas shares his experience of leading change and lay out the steps you need to take in a very systemic way.

Some of the ideas are unconventional. Having read many books on leading change, I had a hidden attitude of not expecting anything new. However, this book is not just about techniques, but about people. Like most books on leading change, Dallas starts out with collecting data to analyze the situation, but unlike other books that recommend you to send out a survey, he wants you to talk to people personally, for coffee or lunch, asking the three key questions he suggests and listening carefully to what they have to say to find out their priorities and hidden complaints.

Similarly, he advises you how to pick the regular people (often those people think to be the weak links), not the hotshots, to form a change team because these people have something to prove. These ideas are unconventional to me.

This book is both for information and reference. I read through the book once and now I am reading it again as I follow the steps to lead change. It will be my long term companion on this journey.

If this book is to lay any claim to authenticity, it must make one point clear above all others. It is this: By persistent and sustained practice, anyone and everyone can make the yoga journey and reach the goal of illumination and freedom. Krishna, Buddha, and Jesus lie in the hearts of all. They are not film stars, mere idols of adulation. They are great inspirational figures whose example is there to be followed. They act as our role models today. Just as they reached Self-Realization, so may we.

Many of you may worry that you are unable to meet the challenges that lie ahead. I want to assure you that you can. I am a man who started from nowhere; I was heavily disadvantaged in many ways. After much time and effort, I began to reach somewhere. I literally emerged from darkness to light, from mortal sickness to health, from crude ignorance to immersion in the ocean of knowledge by one means alone, namely by zealous persistence in the art and science of yoga practice (sadhana). What held good for me will hold good for you too. Today you also have the benefit of many gifted yoga teachers.

When I began yoga, there was, I am sorry to say, no wise, kind teacher to lead me. In fact my own Guru refused to answer any of my innocent inquiries on yoga. He did not instruct me as I do my students, offering them step-by-step guidance in an asana. He would simply demand a posture and leave it to me or his other students to figure out how it could be realized. Perhaps that stimulated some stubborn aspect of my nature, which allied to unshakable faith in the subject of yoga made me burn to go on. I am ardent and passionate, and maybe I needed to show the world that I was not worthless. But far more than that, I wanted to find out who I was. I wanted to understand this mysterious and marvelous "yoga," which could reveal to us our innermost secrets, as equally as it revealed those of the universe around us and our place in it as joyful, suffering, puzzled human beings.

Master yogi Iyengar offers what may turn out to be his last written words on the discipline that he helped popularize with Light on Yoga. Published in 1966, that first book became yoga's "bible" and set the standard for yoga books, providing pictures and instructions. The 86-year-old teacher here expounds the philosophy of yoga—its metaphysics, of which yoga poses, or asanas, represent the physical component. Iyengar yoga is vigorous because it involves the body, mind and spirit, and the master explains those interrelationships clearly. Chapters elaborate on aspects of yoga—the physical, energetic, mental, intellectual and divine, showing the architecture of the comprehensive system of spiritual teachings that lead to samadhi, the state of blissful absorption. Yoga is about health and purity, flexibility and divinity. While this book underlines the intellectual aspect of yoga, it is insufficient for a new yoga student, no substitute for yoga sadhana, practice that requires and integrates body and mind. Beautiful and inspiring

"This is not yoga by the body for the body, but yoga by the body for the mind, for the intelligence."

I loved this book. I wasn't really sure what to expect when I bought it; I only knew that I am a yoga (asana) addict and Iyengar is sort of the father of western yoga, so I thought perhaps I would read the book about his philosophy. I am so glad I did.

I can't say things better than Iyengar himself, so here are some quotes. Overall, if you're on the fence about whether to get this book, I would say get it and you probably will be glad you did.

"We must discover what each sheath of being longs for and nourish it according to its subtle appetites."

Ego is the "small, selfish creature you normally take yourself for."

Pratyahara, the inward turning of the senses, "makes the mind shut up so we can concentrate."

Inspiring and Highly Readable

This is an important and accessible book on the life and philosophy and yoga practice of Mr. Iyengar. Highly readable and inspiring. He is a proponent of yoga for everyone no matter your age. I practice the method he developed with Iyengar certified yoga instructors and truly believe it is the best and safest form of yoga. Reading this book by the master himself has deepened my practice and inspired me in many non yoga areas of my life as well.

The success of EU crisis management has varied greatly and this book aims to identify the key factors that explain the differing degrees of coherence through a comparative analysis of its multidimensional crisis responses in Africa. The empirical focus lies on three prominent EU crisis management cases, namely Libya in 2011, Somalia in 2011-2012, and the Sahel in 2012-2013. It analyses the activities and interaction of EU institutional actors and member states, with a focus on France, the United Kingdom, and Germany. The book argues that the EU represents a rather unpredictable security actor, whose multi-level coherence is contingent on the congruence of domestic economic and electoral interests, as well as national threat perceptions, and the extent to which EU-level coherence norms resonate with national norms on the use of force and modes of multilateral cooperation. In sum, this book offers systematic insight into EU crisis management and clarifies the conceptual and empirical boundaries of the comprehensive approach. Finally, the study of the micro-foundations of coherence allows for policy-relevant suggestions on the EU’s future role as a security actor.
