About the Author
Thomas Del Prete is the inaugural Director of the Adam Institute for Urban Teaching and School Practice at Clark University in Worcester, MA. He is past Director of the Hiatt Center for Urban Education at Clark and a former teacher of history and English at the middle and high school levels. He has worked for twenty-five years in teacher education, school-university partnership, and school reform. His previous books include Improving the Odds: Developing Powerful Teaching Practice and a Culture of Learning in Urban High Schools and Thomas Merton and the Education of the Whole Person. He has participated in hundreds of Teacher Rounds, most with his colleagues in the urban schools of “Main South” in Worcester, MA, in an effort to learn in and from practice.

If you don't have any introduction to marketing at all, this book will do you a great deal of good. Otherwise, it fails to answer the basic question: what is marketing. Marketing is the complex policy making that causes your product to be more visible than competing products, more desirable than competing products and sell better than competing products. This book gives these three subjects a light going over, and is as good a place as any to start, but don't look for any answers here.

Just because Ben Catmull (Monster Parade) tweaks his gothic drawings and paired narratives for humor doesn't mean there aren't shivery chills aplenty in this gloriously nightmarish collection. The book trawls through several haunted houses, with each of the textured, full-page drawings facing a block of spooky or sarcastic story text. The first piece, Drowned Shelley, is the best, describing a house haunted by the ghost of a girl drowned by her drunken stepfather. It starts in sad horror (Say her name 13 times while looking in the pond, and she will drown you in your sleep) and works its way toward the comic (Mispronounce her name... and she will kick you somewhere delicate at the stroke of midnight). The effect of combining trancelike portent and giggles is reminiscent of both Edward Gorey and Chris Van Allsburg's The Mysteries of Harris Burdick. Catmull's pieces are worth savoring, his dark-etched, black-and-white scratchboard-on-Masonite drawings so richly layered they almost seem to be in color. Elegantly evil, and a surefire bet for an early Halloween. (Aug.)

Short, but entertaining

I have been awaiting the next book by Ben Catmull ever since "Monster Parade" caught my eye in 2006. His follow up, a collection of pictures and stories about haunted houses, is a welcome edition to his small collection of output, but it is entirely too short for the price.

Though the page count is listed as 88, only half of those contain drawing. The format of the book contains a short (usually just a sentence) story on the left page and a drawing of the haunted house in question on the right. It is very entertaining, and the artwork is fantastic, but the price is quite high compared to the time invested in reading it.

I can imagine myself revisiting it again, though not too frequently. The content, while macabre, would not be too terribly inappropriate to read to a child. Though nightmares could result.

I liked it. I waited almost 7 years for it. I just wish there was more here.

Beautiful, in a style all its own...

This a beautiful book - Catmull has a style all his own.

Like his creatures in previous works, the spaces he creates here are enchantingly beautiful as well as amusing and creepy.

This book lives in our living room and friends always notice the cover and find themselves drawn to pick it up, so we find ourselves enjoying it over and over as we watch our friends discover it.

This is another great piece of work from Ben Catmull.

Good if you don't follow Jeffs deer blog but it seems to be too close a copy of his articles. I was hoping for more for purchasing the book but some of the chapters are the same as blog posts, some word for word. I was reading and thought it was too familiar so I checked and sure enough it was word for word the same as a blog article.

Using his strategies for mature whitetail hunting has helped me improve the class of deer I target and shoot each year. A good read for a novice or experienced hunter. Good Basic Text

This is a very good introductory petrology text which combines igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic petrology in one volume. With a publication date of 1996, it may be getting a little long in the tooth, however. For example, the book discusses the Wilson hot spot model without reference to mantle plumes. With the exception of some apparent confusion about the effect on seismic velocity of the asthenosphere, I found no significant errors nor editing problems. My only significant criticism is that all of the photographs are in black and white, and some are printed so darkly that details are hard to make out. One would think that, with a price approaching $100, the publisher would be able to include a bit of color in the appropriate places.

Note: This review is of the first edition; perhaps the problems with the figures have been addressed in the second edition.

I was a student of Brent Owens in the Geology Dept. at William and Mary. He is an absolute first rate teacher and this text reflects aptitude for teaching. The desciptions are precise, the reading easy, and the subject material is up-to-date. I liked the text enough to keep it and not re-sell it to an incoming student.

This book was great for the petrology class I took last semester. I recommend at least a little background in Mineralogy in order to get the as much as you can out of the terminology. I took Mins the semester before so this book was no trouble at all. The CD has some really neat pictures on it as well.

I was always a curious child, so much so that I used to examine my meat for blood vessels and tendons. As a consequence I developed a bit of an aversion to meat although it took some time for this to develop into vegetarianism. I eat a little fish these days though!

When I entered the second to last year of school I had to choose my subjects. Unfortunately, the nun who ran the chemistry lab was retiring so I didn't have that option. I loved that lab - it was so inspiring! When you walked down the lane to school you could see the large jars of different coloured liquids and salts through the window. My only option then was to study biology. As it turns out, this is a diverse and fascinating subject; my favourite subsection was genetics - a theme which still interests me today. My second ARCTIC6 Adventure is called Killer Genes ;)

I didn't really get to study physics or chemistry until I went to college and although I discovered that chemistry is not my thing (too many bonds to remember) I loved physics, especially the big questions. I'm still really curious about the origins of the universe and ultimately what lies beyond, if anything. And if there's nothing beyond then 'what' is 'nothing'?

Maybe in the future scientists will be able to give us these answers. Hopefully, I'm still around to find out.

I get to be the first to review this book!! I don't know if that is a good thing or not but this book certainly is a good thing! Killer Strangelets is along the lines of a comedy/spy action story with a lot of intrigue thrown in for good measure.It's almost like a two-for-one deal that you can't miss. The character introduction is smooth and you learn a lot about each one in a very short time. I like that a lot because too many times authors choose to dwell on character descriptions and I think that is something that a good author doesn't need to do. C.T. Furlong is a good author and gives the reader what they were originally looking for, a good story. The book isn't very long which makes it a better choice for those who don't have a lot of time to sit down and read all day. Overall, the book was very well written and the author can tell a good story. I look forward to the rest of the books in this series and if they are as good as this one, you will see more reviews from this reader!
