I found it a bit confusing at first to keep the characters straight. A genealogy chart would have been helpful. Also whoever "proofed" this book missed a couple of typos that should have been caught.

Well done

There are two things that I love, genealogy and mystery, and this book filled both. I have to agree with everyone else, this is book that kept me reading, not wanting to put it down. When I couldn't read, I was thinking about what would happen next. As the main character said that as she looked into her family line, the people became real to her, that's how I felt about characters as I read. I almost hate to have it end. I have already recommended this to my friends.

Hard to put down

I enjoyed this book a great deal. It was a page-turner for me. There was a bit of supernatural that does not usually interest me, but there were so many hooks that pulled me in and kept me wanting more. I did not give it five stars because there were dozens of proofreading errors that interrupted reading rhythm. Even so, I am anxiously awaiting the next M.K. Jones book.

About the Author

Charles A. Brau received his B.A. in Engineering from Cornell University and his M.A. (in Engineering) and Ph.D. in Applied Physics from Harvard University. In the course of his career, he has been a theorist, an experimenter, a manager, and currently a professor of physics at the Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. He focuses his research on free-electron lasers (FEL) and electron beams. He became a program manager of the FEL program at Los Alamos National Laboratory and then a director of the FEL Center at Vanderbilt University. In 1988 he was a visiting scientist in the Department of Nuclear Physics at the University of Oxford in England. He is an author of 7 patents and numerous publications, including 2 books. He is also a fellow of American Physical Society.

Disappointing...

The moment the professor in our class told us that instead of Jackson we'd be using another book I couldn't hide my joyous feelings. I ordered Brau's book (the recommended for our e&m course) and waited...

After living 3 months with this book all I have to say is how disappointed I feel. I thought it would be a really modern e&m book. In some aspects it is. The material it covers is pretty interesting. But the book has so many mistakes that get very frustrating. Keep in mind that at the back cover an errata webpage is referred (with several pages of corrections!). Trust me, you'll need it. Also, most of the problems are exactly the opposite of Jackson's - too easy, although I must say that I like the approach "Using A prove that B holds" - by knowing the result you can feel more confident when solving a problem.

In short, I read the book only when I HAD TO - meaning when we were assigned problems from it. I was oscillating between this and Jackson... Now I wish we had used the second all the way through...

Modern treatment of classical electrodynamics

In most textbooks, including Jackson's, Maxwell's equations are derived empirically
through Coulomb's law, the law of Biot and Savart, Faraday's law, and Maxwell's
inclusion of displacement current. This approach has been presented again to most of
physics graduate students; However, using this approach to graduate student will diminish much of the excitement and enthusiasm and ignore the entirely new way to look at from the relativistic point of view where electric and magnetic fields are really different aspects of same physical quantity.

Brau's arrangement of the text, was influenced by that of Landau and Lifshitz, developed much easier version with a theoretically more elegant
approach: a treatment of the electromagnetic fields which emphasizes its relativistic appects from the beginning.

Also, Charles A. Brau gathers valuable information from such classic texts as Max Born and Emil Wolf's Principles of Optics, Joseph W. Goodman's Introduction to Fourier Optics, and L. D. Landau and E. M. Lifshitz's The Classical Theory of Fields, Jackson's classical book, and packages it all into one very readable volume.

RATING FOR THE KINDLE VERSION - DO NOT BUY FOR KINDLE!

This book is really good, but I should have listened to the previous comment about the KINDLE VERSION being difficult to read. The footnotes are not accessible and where pictures should be it just says "can't put photo" or something. I bought this one week ago exactly and it will not let me return it. I wish I could return it and get the hard copy, it is really a good book but I do not enjoy reading it on the kindle because I feel like I am missing a lot and that is no fun.

What are you waiting for?

Great book. I can't believe I took so long to get around to buying it. It's not necessarily the type of book I'd read over and over, but I will definitely be lending it to friends to read. Just a very well written book and obviously a unique story. If you like Criminal Minds, Law and Order and those kind of shows you will love this book. Written from the prosecutor's perspective, there are details and explanations that are just...well, real.

Recommended.

I purchased the hard copy as recommend by another reader. Apparently the kindle version doesn't have the pictures that are in the hard copy. If that's the case (I can't be sure because I didn't order the kindle copy), I would HIGHLY recommend you purchase and read this one!

A Classic of True Crime

Amazingly enough (especially considering my interest in the macabre), I had never before picked up this classic true crime account of the Manson Murders. I’m pleased to say that I have rectified that deficiency, and that I was not disappointed in the least.

Bugliosi (who was also the lead prosecutor of Manson and his co-defendants) begins the 600+ page book with the Tate murders themselves. We follow the housekeeper as she enters the property to begin her day, the trauma of the bodies being discovered, and the movements of the police who first entered the scene. We are next led along to the LaBianca murder scene (the murder of an elderly couple also committed by Manson’s “Family”). From these two bloodbaths, Bugliosi takes the reader along through the (occasionally horribly bungled) police investigation, letting us walk along with investigators as they try to make sense of such seemingly senseless killings.

As I said earlier, Bugliosi was the lead prosecutor of the case (and occasional investigator). This is certainly in evidence as Bugliosi approaches “Helter Skelter” like a trial in and of itself. Physical evidence, witness statements, and paper trails are carefully presented and thoroughly dissected for the reader. The sheer weight of evidence eventually brought together against Manson and his family is presented here in largely chronological order, and shows just how completely Bugliosi throws himself into his work. There is a good reason why Helter Skelter is considered one of the best true crime books written (easily up there with Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood).

So, grab this book and read it. For such a hefty tome, it goes by very quickly. Bugliosi’s style is intense, but highly readable. Any one who is interested in true crime will obviously love this book, but even if that isn’t your usual genre, this is a compelling read about a charismatic madman and the incredible influence he had, not only on his followers, but on the country as a whole.

J. RICHARD HACKMAN is Cahners-Rabb Professor of Social and Organizational Psychology at Harvard University. He received his Ph.D. in social psychology from the University of Illinois in 1966, and taught at Yale University until 1986. He is coauthor of several books, including Work Redesign (1980).

A must read classic

Work Redesign is written in 1980 and (unfortunately) just as relevant today as it was in 1980! The book is about redesigning work so that it increases the internal motivation of the employees. This increases their job satisfaction and their quality of work. It describes when, how and when not and how not to do this.

The consists of four parts: Introduction, individuals, teams and change.

The first part, simply called "introduction" explores the relationship between people and their job and asks, is there a problem? The authors conclude there is, work is getting more and more boring and it is creating social problems. It then looks at two approaches, changing the people or changing the work and summarizes the research done on both these approaches. It also describes the approach taken in this book and puts it in context with the other approaches.

The second part covers individuals on their job. It first looks at the properties that the job should have after it was redesigned. The next chapter then proposes a model for diagnosing the current job. This is needed so that you know whether the job actually needs to be redesigned and, perhaps more important, what parts of the job need to be redesigned. The last chapter in this part then gives some principles and an example of redesigning jobs.

The third part covers redesigning work for teams. It covers the difference between groups and self-managed work groups and only focuses on self-managing teams. The first chapter models teams effectiveness and talks about the change of the manager role when moving to self-managing work. The second chapter in this part when talks about how to support self-managing teams and how to create the organizational context. It doesn't really cover much about the actual work redesign and instead just points back to that of the individual tasks. The redesign principles are the same.

The last part talks about the change. The first chapter in this part summarizes the choices that need to be made when redesigning work. Choices like including individuals, focus on theory or intuition etc. The last chapter (excellent chapter) talks about redesign as a technique for bringing organizational change and especially covers the difficulties of doing so. It explains how redesign can piggyback on other changes. The last few pages make a sober prediction about the future and the influence of work redesign. Unfortunately, the authors prediction has come true.

Work redesign is an excellent book. Well-written, extremely well researched and entertaining. Also it is thought-provoking. I enjoyed reading this book very much (like other work from Hackman) and would recommend it to everyone. Five stars, without a doubt.

A must read for practitioners, students and consultants.

This book is one of the best examples of robust reseaches on organisations conducted in the late Seventies. It combines the hard vision with the psycological insight coming from such pioneers as Mayo, Herzberg and others in this field. The book is very useful to understand how to diagnose the health and productivity of organisation throughout the Job Diagnostic Survey. Time passed by, since that era, but the books still remains a pillar to figure out effective design of work in current digital environment.

My favorite origami book so far

Not only does this book have a great array of models, it includes the theories and principles behind them, which is something that most books of this nature lack. Each model if focused around understanding a particular technique, ranging from the most fundamental to advanced. Another thing I like about this book is rather than just exposing the reader/folder to one type of origami, there are models for different types so you can learn about multi-piece, 3 dimensional, modular, tessellation, and even teabag folding. There is also a model for each of the Chinese zodiac which I found to be really cool. The diagrams are all very clear and easy to follow showing 2 toned paper (as most origami paper is), which tends to be a fundamental problem among origami books. I'd also like to point out that Genuine Origami caters to all levels. A beginner can pick this up to learn the basics and get started with some really neat models and still be learning from it much later. I would say I'm fairly intermediate and I still have quite a bit to absorb from this book, and I still enjoy the simple models as well.

The Demon Returns

Jun Maekawa has been one of the premier origami innovators of the last 30 years. His 'Devil', which graces the cover of this book, is one of the most famous and fantastic designs of what I like to call the Early Age of Super-complexity, (though by today's standards it is more aptly considered high-intermediate). I learned the model from 'Viva! Origami!" which is only available in Japanese. The new folding method in "Genuine Origami" includes the creatures ears which were missing in the original diagrams. I lovingly call this model "Nick, the Nicotine Demon" after I used it to help some of my dorm-mates quit smoking.
All of the models in this book are constructed from single sheets of paper, mostly square, with no cutting or glue. This book is a good choice for a second origami book because it combines clear diagrams with a progression from simple to complex models, ending with the 'Devil'. Note that most of the more complex models should be folded from 10"x10" paper. The most outlandish model in here is a deer folded from a tea-bag wrapper.

a new look

While this book was very well written and the story engaging, my favorite part was reading an anorexia memoir from someone not born and raised in the US. This culture has become so saturated with talk of diets and being thin, it's almost not surprising when someone develops an ED. However, other countries seem to have a much healthier relationship with food, so it was interesting to see the story of anorexia still develop the same in a very different environment. It just goes to show that EDs aren't really about food at all.

great memoir about freeing oneself from thier demons

I enjoyed reading her story, and would recommend to anyone who enjoys reading about people overcoming grand obstacles to achieve the life they deserve. When she was living with anorexia, the disease wasn't understood nearly as well as it is today, and it was very hard for everyone not understanding that the issue wasn't about food so much as needing control. Very good story for $3.

A beautiful memoir

This whole book was a journey with this girl, as she gave in, and eventually battled her anorexia. She is honest and thorough, and will make you feel for her throughout the book. She doesn't sugar-coat or promote this eating disorder, she simply tells the story of what it did to her, and about what she had to do to start along the path to recovery.
