☆☆☆☆☆�5 Stars"Susan Griscom has created a great supernatural romance in A Gypsy's Kiss. The main characters are well developed, especially Breena as she struggles to cope with her 'gift.' She is resourceful, though, and knows how to handle herself. Hawk is a good match for her and the chemistry between them is great. The plot line for both of them is a novel way to keep the two of them apart and ramp up the tension. I think this book will do very well because it is easy to get into and the characters are relatable. A good start to the series, and I look forward to reading more from this author." After my last disappointing read, I chose this book with the hope that it would prove to be a better choice. I was not disappointed. A GYPSY'S KISS is an entertaining story of first love that is filled with sufficient mystery and drama to keep you turning the pages. I found myself glued to my Kindle, which I had a hard time putting down. The author wove a captivating tale that plunges the reader into a world of hockey, college life, and supernatural capabilities.

Can you imagine going through life not being able to touch anyone and forming lasting relationships? Well, this is the life that Breena Cassidy is forced to live. Breena can see 12 hours into the future of anyone she makes skin to skin contact with. Although she is forced to live her life in solitude, she is very ambitious. She uses her skills in combination with tarot cards to help offset her college expenses. She does this at a variety of campus parties. It was on one such occasion that she met a mysterious guy who would bring about a change in her life in a manner she least expected.

Hawk Covington is every college girl's fantasy. He has a body to die for and the skills that make him a great hockey player. His main focus is on hockey, girls, and parties. He has no interest in being involved in a committed relationship. One of the most remarkable things about him is his two coloured eyes which give him the ability to track people and objects. He has lived a life relatively free of danger, and when he finds that he is being stalked by an unknown individual, he sought Breena's help. What he never counted on was his instant and eventually growing attraction to the lovely and remarkable Breena.

I was hooked from the moment I began reading. I was eager to find out who was stalking Hawk. The interaction between the main characters was entertaining and intriguing. The attraction between them was evident from the moment they touched. I could understand Breena's confusion when she touched Hawk and she did not have her usual reaction. They were both baffled by their feelings for each other. Watching them trying to come to terms with their feeling was both endearing and sweet.

There were incidences that I never expected to happen. This made for an interesting read. In the process of trying to find out who was stalking him, Hawk discovered things about himself that he never thought possible. It had him questioning what he had grown up believing. This discovery would lead to a major change in his life.

Although I enjoyed the story there are a few issues that I had:

1. It was evident that an intruder had been in both Hawk's and Breenas' room. However, the manner in which it was dealt with would indicate that they were not in the least concerned. This was not in line with the concept of the story.

2. I thought Hawk was too quick to trust a certain character. The fact that he was being stalked by an unknown individual should have made him more cautious as to who he could trust.

Verdict: A GYPSY'S KISS is an entertaining read that would appeal to fans of romance, mystery, and paranormal activities. This is the first book in the Sectorium series and can be read as a stand-alone. I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series.

Looking for your next new book boyfriend? Hawk may just be it. He's one of the 'good guys' with a cocky edge that just make you melt.

A Gypsy's Kiss is the first book in Susan's Sectorium series, a spin-off of her incredible Whisper Cape trilogy, but no worries... it stands perfectly well on its own. Just enough backstory is given to make you aware of who and what the Sectorium is and how Breena fits into it.

Never having had the ability to touch another without exposing her secret, Breena has led a sheltered life. She's longed for the connection only physical contact can give, but was resigned to spend her life without it. Making extra money on the side at college doing tarot card readings, she's perplexed, intrigued and little bit frightened when she encounters a guy she's not able to read, even when she tries.

Hawk was fine with the simple things in life - parties, hockey and women. Until he found himself in a bind and sought out a myserious woman purported to be able to read someone's future. The one thing he wasn't expecting, however, was how he would react to her when they finally did meet, or how much his life would change after meeting her.

A Gypsy's Kiss is a tantalizing tale of discovery, danger, romance and love. If you're looking for a sweet and sexy love story with a bit of mystery and action, then you've come to the right place!

Something For Everyone!

Although its characters are related in some way with those populating Griscom's Whisper Cape series, A Gypsy's Kiss is a very different sort of book. The first in the Sectorium series, AGK reads more like what I think might be considered a New Adult story. Brenna and Hawk are a terrific younger couple, whose challenges do not -- refreshingly -- come out of misunderstandings or silly character flaws. Their love story moves steadily along in a fine parallel plotline that is set against a very real threat to their futures. Like Whisper Cape's merry band of super-powered individuals, Brenna and Hawk each have unusual abilities that set them apart from "normal" people; yet Hawk has mysteries unfolding right and left while Brenna deals with her own personal journey of sexual awakening. They are very likeable people, Brenna with her unique "psychic" abilities and Hawk's amazing talent with a hockey stick. All in all, this book has something for everyone. Definitely one of Susan's finest books to date. I'm so thrilled she has started another fabulous series for me and her other fans to dive into!

Not a traditional design textbook, but it works.

Rather than being a traditional textbook that covers the design of an aircraft from initial mission planning to detail design, Airship Technology is a collection of individually written chapters that cover in total the same breadth of material. This causes the tone to change from chapter to chapter due to the different authors, but each author is clearly an expert on the subject matter in the chapter and all write quite lucidly. Some understanding of fabric design and terminology (such as "gores") is assumed, but if you go into it blind like I did there are more than enough context clues to aid you. This is one of the few textbooks I've actually read cover-to-cover.

NOTE: It does emphasize blimp design rather than zeppelin design; this is because for most applications airships currently do blimps are the better choice. It does have some data on zeppelins, however.

Must Have for any Airship Enthusiast or Engineer

The vast majority of books on airship design date back to the first half of the 20th Century. Airship Technology, edited by Gabriel Khoury, is the only recent technical/engineering manual on airship design. Each chapter is written by a recognized expert on that specific area of airship design and operation. The book covers all the bases, including materials, aerostatics, ground handling, piloting, and even solar power.

Airship Technology is a must have for any airship enthusiast or aeronautical engineer. When it came out in 1999, I paid more than US$100 for the book -- worth every penny. As of November 2004, the book sells for US$75 -- an honest bargain. Make sure to add "Airship Technology" to your library!

A Very Useful and Entertaining Book

I have a vast collection of SQL books. If it was published in the last 10 or so years, I probably have a copy. Some of them are very good, but there are quite a few similar-looking SQL books, with a similar purpose and a similar look-and-feel. So it takes some doing for a new SQL book to rise above the chaff... but SQL Antipatterns by Bill Karwin manages to do so.

This is not yet another book on SQL syntax or style. SQL Antipatterns is something altogether unique. The book is designed to point out the common things that SQL developers do, that they shouldn't be doing. Each chapter assists the reader in identifying, explaining, and correcting dangerous practices - or antipatterns.

If you take the time to read through this thoughtful book I'm sure you'll recognize some of the antipatterns. Some of you will have done them yourself, whereas others of you probably will have worked to undo some of them.

OK, many of you are still likely to be wondering what exactly is an antipattern is, right? Well, I'll give you one of the examples from Karwin's book -- Jaywalking. This is the first antipattern covered in the book and it is one of my favorites (err, I mean least favorites, I think). Jaywalking is when developers store comma-separated lists in a database column instead of redesigning the database structure in a normalized fashion. Karwin calls this jaywalking because both this practice and actual jaywalking on a street are acts of "avoiding an intersection." Funny...

Each antipatterns is described along with a clear explanation as to why it is a bad practice and advice on building a better solution. Other antipatterns covered in the book are named almost as intriguingly, such as Pseudokey Neat-Freak, Keyless Entry, Magic Beans, See No Evil, and Metadata Tribbles.

The book is not just for unlearning what you shouldn't be doing, it can also be helpful for learning new and improved development techniques. Reading SQL Antipatterns can help you to learn about current technology for full-text search, how to design code that is resistant to SQL injection attacks, and many other techniques for success.

The book is very well-organized into four parts grouping the antipatterns into the following categories: logical database design, physical database design, queries, and application development.

SQL Antipatterns should become a useful tool for DBAs and database programmers to help them create well-designed databases and applications... and to help us eliminate these common errors from our database implementations.

An excellent guide to Database Design tradeoffs

I recently got a new job and inherited a vast collection of SQL queries to maintain. Reading Karwin's book has been a tremendous help! Each chapter considers a particular design issue ("How can I store more than one value in a field?") and shows the most common, flawed method (the "antipattern"). He carefully explains the disadvantages, then usually shows several other ways to accomplish the same goal.

One of the things I like best about the book is that the analysis isn't black and white. Every methods has advantages and disadvantages, which Karwin carefully unpacks. He also reviews and clarifies relational theory as he goes: his discussion of "Null" is a masterpiece. In general, he favors solutions that don't subvert the basic principles of relational database theory.

This would not be a good book to try to learn SQL or Database theory from, but if you are just starting to get some real-world experience it is a Godsend. Highly Recommended.

Deals with problems related to both database's design and application developing

I must admit that there was barely anything new to me in the book, but I have been in the field for quite a few years, dealing with many projects, so I had the "privilege" of seeing many horror stories. Still, I feel the book is valuable even for seasoned veterans. The main benefit is that the author organized and grouped the anti-patterns, each one is analyzed very well and contains some wise, unbiased suggestions. Each chapter stands on its own and can be read stand-alone.
The book is worth an extra star because it deals with problems related to both database's design and application developing; most book out there either cover one or the other.
This should be a mandatory reading for beginner DBAs and application developers, veterans may like it too, since it can help refreshing some concepts and can be used as a reference too.

A solid introduction

There are now plenty of good introductions to the philosophy of science available, and I would say that this one by Geoffrey Gorham is among the better ones, especially for general readers (ie, outside the classroom setting). Though the book is only introductory, Gorham covers the main ideas, and he does so clearly, even with topics which are usually difficult to understand. Here is an outline of the book:

- The book begins with a short Introduction which briefly describes the scope and aims of philosophy and philosophy of science.

- Chapter 1 provides a history of Western science up through the scientific revolution, emphasizing philosophical aspects, and thus connecting "natural philosophy" with contemporary philosophy of science.

- Chapter 2 focuses on the difficult question of how to distinguish science versus non-science, with emphasis on Popper's falsifiability criterion for demarcation. Intelligent design and string theory are presented as case studies.

- Chapter 3 is about "the scientific method," thus covering topics such as induction, deduction, empiricism, rationalism, and Kuhn's perspective on scientific paradigms and revolutions.

- Chapter 4 is about the "aims of science," or what we can hope to achieve with science, and the focus is on varieties of scientific realism and anti-realism.

- Chapter 5 delves into the controversial (some would say bedeviling) area of the social dimensions of science, and so a fairly diverse set of topics is explored, such as constructivism, feminist perspectives, and the relationships between science and human values.

- Chapter 6 is about the future of humanity, as might be forecast based mainly on our understanding of science and its history. Much of this chapter is interesting, but I have to say that I found it odd for this chapter to be included in a book on philosophy of science, to the extent that it might have made more sense to leave this chapter out entirely. But I won't go as far as to deduct a star from my rating of the book.

- The book concludes with detailed suggestions for further reading.

Overall, I recommend this book to anyone who has little or no background in philosophy of science, but has a strong interest in philosophy and/or science. And those who have a significant background in philosophy of science may also enjoy reading the book for the purpose of review (the topic is certainly worthy of regular reviews).

Almost a great book

I agree with the glowing testimonials and other reviews except for Chapter One on the Origins of Science. This first chapter on the history of science is marred by a number of significant errors: The authors states that Anaxagoras was responsible for the four Greek elements, when it is generally attributed to Empedocles; he suggests that Ptolemaic planetary theory is still being used for navigation, when a generic geocentric arrangement is instead employed; he suggests that the Keplerian innovation merely brought Copernican planetary theory up to par with Ptolemaic theory, when in fact it exceeded it in accuracy by 50 times or more; he refers to Pope Urban VIII as "Pope Urban VII"; he describes the 1633 trial of Galileo as having been presided over by Cardinal Bellarmine even though Bellarmine had died in 1621; he describes Galileo having lived with the consolation of his nearby daughter until he died in 1638, when in fact she died in 1634 and he died in 1642.

However, none of these errors have an impact on the philosophical points that the author makes in later chapters and he represents the historical record well when he uses it to inform the philosophical discussion. Still, the errors right at the beginning of the book might discredit the author in the eyes of some - and that would be too bad, because the rest of the book is excellent!

Great book

I purchased this book as an introduction to the subject to prepare for an advanced Phil of science class. It was extremely helpful, easy to read and relatable. Its a great read and is organized very intelligently. A little previous knowledge in philosophy is probably helpful in getting through this book, but it is truly introductory, making it a good starting off point.

Cameron is William Rand Kenan University Professor, Emory University in Atlanta, GA.

Larry Neal is Emeritus Professor of Economics at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, and Visiting Professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Specializing in financial history and European economies, he is author of The Rise of Financial Capitalism: International Capital Markets in the Age of Reason (Cambridge University Press, 1990) and The Economics of Europe and the European Union (Cambridge University Press, 2007), and is co-editor of The Origins and Development of Financial Markets and Institutions: From the Seventeenth Century to the Present (Cambridge University Press, 2009) and 'I am Not Master of Events': The Speculations of John Law and Lord Londonderry in the Mississippi and South Sea Bubbles (2012).

Not Bad

The title of this book should read "An Economic History of Europe," because 90% of the material focuses on the economic development of Europe. This is understandable considering that the industrial revolution first occured in Europe, and pulsated outwards. However, the amount of time given towards explaining the economies of the middle east, Asia, Oceania, Australasia, Africa, Latin America, and even the USA are so minute that the title is decieving and for all intensive purposes incorrect.
Nevertheless, the book is quite interesting, as it progresses from the dawn of human civilization with very concise and brief summaries well in to the twentieth century becoming more desciptive and detailed. If you are interested in how the world economy arrived to its current level, then I would suggest that this book is a good read and worth your while. Since this edition was published in 1997, it is excusable for the author to omit the economic consequences of the Euro, the rise of China and the rest of Asia, and the economic implications of Septemer 11. The author also refuses to offer his speculative view on the future of the world economies, thereby leaving the reader to do his or her on guess work. Although the introduction of the book, on the current inequality of world economies, is quite interesting, it is not elaborated upon towards the end of the book, and causes a lack of continuity. If you wish to understand better the world economy, you would be better off reading the encyclopedia, Lonely Planet travel guides, or perhaps even better, (what I have done) which is to travel and see these countries for yourself with your own eyes.

Good Book!

This book is more of a history book than an economics book. The reader should not expect to encounter a lot of mathematics or graphs. As the title states, this book represents the history of economics from the dawn of modern human beings to the present.

Jurisprudence: Themes and Concepts takes an innovative approach to the study of jurisprudence. Drawing together a range of specialists making original contributions, it provides a summary, analysis and critique of basic themes in, and major contributions to, the study of jurisprudence.

The book explores issues and ideas in jurisprudence in a way that integrates them with legal study more broadly, avoiding the tendency in recent years for the subject to become overly inward-looking, specialist and technical.

Since the approach taken is an interdisciplinary one, it also makes connections with contemporary issues in political and social theory�– such as changing conceptions of sovereignty, globalisation, the role of rights, and the relationship of other forms of power to the legal realm�– in order to situate current jurisprudential debates.

The book is divided into three parts: Law and Politics, Legal Reasoning, and Law and Modernity. Its coverage is therefore broad and links legal, political, philosophical and social analysis to wider contemporary concerns with which the study of jurisprudence should be engaged.

BREAKING A CERTAIN APPROACH TO JURISPRUDENCE TEACHING

An appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green Chambers

This excellent book for undergraduates is divided into 3 broad themes, sub divided into general and advanced topics. The authors have broken with the more usual approach to teaching jurisprudence which is to be welcomed for its innovative study method deployed here.

New editions for Jurisprudence do not appear as frequently as, say `case heavy' substantive law areas so the authors have merely tinkered with the text to improve it and sharpen it for the new edition... and they do just that! So this second edition includes a rearrangement of the general sections, re-written where necessary for a more systematic coverage.

With the advanced sections some new topics have been added, notably on law and deconstruction, and law and autopoiesis to name just a couple of areas. There's also an enhanced discussion of the rise of legal positivism linked to the rise of the modern state. The changing role of natural and human rights discourse is well covered to take account of recent developments.

Professors Veitch, Christodoulidis and Farmer have created a very modern teaching tool here breaking from the old approaches so the book is very well described as `accessible, interdisciplinary and socially informed' and successfully takes account of the most recent developments in current jurisprudential thought. It is just what I need to explain modern jurisprudence to the worried student!
