I can't say enough about these Sacketts and Louis L'Amour. I've enjoyed every word. Every story. Every shootout. And even the beauty of the country. L. L'Amour is not only very talented, but very imaginative. Sometime I'm even nervous just reading. You are going to so enjoy reading about the Sacketts and the country they helped discover and tamed. Enjoy! But except to be late to work whenever you read the night before. You just can't put the book down.

Fitting sequel

The trio of authors involved in this have to be commended for not basically rewriting the first book with different characters, which I think is what a lot of people expected/hoped for considering the hostile reviews this (and "The Gripping Hand" another sequel in the same vein) have garnered. Of course they can't capture the magic of the first book because that was all about the shock of the new . . . but they gamely try here and almost succeed. If you haven't figured it out yet, reading this book is absolutely useless without first having at least a passing knowledge of the Legacy of Heorot, this expands the story twenty years beyond the end of that book (one of the problems is that there was no pressing need for a sequel, the first book wrapped itself up fairly well and neatly) and follows new and old characters as a new generation grows up on the planet of Avalon and gets ready to grab the torch and settle the planet. The Grendel Wars of twenty years ago are long forgotten and the generation gap is in full force here with the "Earthborn" and "Starborn" undergoing quite a bit of friction with each other. This book is highly entertaining and you'll find yourself devouring large chunks of it in a sitting, it's not a weighty philosophical book, mostly adventure with a bunch of science thrown in to dazzle the readers. Part of the problem is it tries to be everything at once and winds up being gigantic without really satisfying any of those parts. It's a scientific exploration of Avalon, delving into the flora and fauna with typical Niven zeal, and I have to admit his ideas are dazzling, the place feels both alien and familiar at the same time. But it's also a vague attempt at social commentary, with the more conversation adults warring with the far more liberal values of their children . . . however there's also a big focus on sex for no apparent reason. They handle the large cast well and while it's hard to get a feel for the newer group, a lot of the older characters are deepened by this treatment, especially Cadmann, who while being the hero was very one note at times. Lastly it's a tense adventure thriller but the tension never really develops until the end and while it is rewarding, you spend a lot of time wondering where this is all eventually going. The resolution is a tad fuzzy, especially when it comes to motivations but those are all just quibbles. The book may not win any awards but it's well crafted and enjoyable for all its bulk and a welcome revisiting of a fascinating planet. Those wanting to go beyond The Legacy may want to look here but don't expect a carbon copy.

Different than the first, but still very good!

I picked up The Legacy of Heorot the predecessor to this book a few months ago and read it thinking that it was a standalone piece. While browsing for books I found this sequel and grabbed it up having enjoyed the first book. Obviously, if you haven't read the first book go check out the reviews for it before reading any further.
The second book picks up about twenty years give or take after the events of the first. The next generation has grown into their own and are faced with the fact that their parents are much too cautious in exploring their adopted homeworld. Their parents, the characters from the first book, have built up their own system for making decisions. This takes into consideration their experiences with Grendals in the first book and the fact that most to varying degree were affected by their trip to the planet in hibernation. In the words of their children they have ice on their minds.
The new generation of children includes some that were embryos brought from earth born from artificial wombs. These children were raised among the colonists without a strict mother and father. The standout among these now grown bottle babies is Aaron Tragon. His leadership of the new generation is what sends them out to explore the unknown main continent.
Cadmann Weyland and the original group of colonists struggle to deal with the differing attitudes of this new generation which leads to conflict. The hostile nature of the planet itself comes into play as well giving this book a tense edge as after having seen the events of the first book the reader is left wondering what other dangers lurk on the main continent. When those dangers come to the fore they make for exciting and fascinating moments.
Overall the book is well thought out and a very good continuation of the previous storyline. Niven always seems to do his best work partnered with others, Pournelle and Barnes being the two that he has worked with the most. This book is no exception to this, although the focus on the hedonism of the younger generation doesn't seem to have much of a point and doesn't really go anywhere except to possibly outline the cultural differences between the Earthborn and Starborn. Other than that the book is tight and well crafted. I actually found it to be better than the first one overall.
The book's central conflict is resolved well, but there seems to be room for another sequel. Hopefully we will see that soon.
I'd probably give the book 4.5 stars as the original would get 4 and this one is slightly better.

Beowulf's Children lacks the punch of Legacy of Heorot

The sequel to Legacy of Heorot(LOH), takes you back to Avalon 25 years after the Grendel Wars. The community is split between the orginal settlers and the "Star Born". This rift is evident during the novel, and only gets larger. The colonists finally take a step to settle the mainland, in which they meet a deadly new "Avalon Surprise". Unfortunately, this book lacks the raw intensity and power of LOH. The book plays more on social structures and issues. On the positive side, the book does create an intersting new threat found on Avalon, and makes you wonder if there will be a sequel.

I am an avid reader of Joseph Murphy. His book "Psychic Perception: The Magic of Extrasensory power" is amazing. His ideas that psychic power comes directly from God, because the the God Mind contains all memories from the beginning of man to the present,is something I agree with. His ideas on past lives and reincarnation are logical. If you want to learn how to get in touch with your psychis abilities, which Joseph Murphy states everyone has, this book will help you. Understand though, this is not a straight foward step by step guide. He shows you through examples of people who go through different situations and what they do. If you like Joseph Murphy's books, you will enjoy this one. If you have never read Joseph Murphy's books, this book may give you a different way of looking how God works in you life. I would suggest you read his book "Power of Your Subconscious Mind" first to give you Murphy's core beliefs. His writings have totally change the way I look at God.

Another Great Book By A Master Teacher

Dr. Murphy often touched on psychic phenomena in previous books of his that I've read, which is now about a half-dozen. So it gave me great pleasure to see him address an entire book to the subject. Once again, he writes in his easy to read, easily understandable style. This is a book to be savored again and again, particularly for mind-power fans with a spiritual inclination. Read and learn.

Great Quality

I was concerned when I ordered this for my sister as a gift; many reviews said that the book was in bad shape when they recieved it. The one I recieved was great. In fact, I could tell by the spine that it had never even been opened.

My sister loved it and quickly thumbed through it. She said that it was so close to the movie dialog and she loved reading along. More than anything, she loved the keepsake, since she is an old movie buff.

This script was a treat to read and to compare with the 1939 movie version of "The Women". Apparently, it is the revised version from the 1973 revival, with references to things such as James Bond and the Beatles. I only wish I could lay my hands on the version of the play which premiered in 1936.

A solid 5 star for Colored pencils but my Fiskars Gel pens and Triplus fineliners bleed through the paper. Printed front & back

First I want to let you know that of all the color mediums I have only colored pencils work well in this book, unless you want to sacrifice the picture on the back of the page you are coloring. My Fiskars Gel pens and Triplus fineliners both bleed through the paper, but there are an impressive 86 illustrations to color and colored pencils work beautifully on the paper.

The illustrations are divided in basically 4 groups there are 16 full page detailed patterns both geometric and floral, 27 collage patterns that are my favorite and include shoes, hats, dresses, perfume bottles, glasses, ice-cream treats, coats, fish, teapots and many more. In addition to those you will find 25 architectural pictures of buildings, some close up and some street scenes, but that is not all there are another 18 illustrations of individual people, car, cup, bowls, feet, fish etc. This is a diverse collection with images that can be completed in an hour and some that will take a week.

The art work has a hand drawn look.

1. This book is square and only (9 �”x9 � “) with 42 pages and 86 illustrations to color including the inside covers, printed on the front and back of each page, on medium weight, bright white paper.

2. The illustrations in this book vary and include: 16 Full page patterns, 27 collage patterns, 25 architectural illustrations, and 6 people in poses from the back or covering their faces with miscellaneous items, 12 illustrations of individual items.

3. All markers and Fiskars Gel pens bleed through the pages of this book, however you can still use markers and choose just one on each of the 42 pages to color and I will probably let my grandchildren use markers on some of the pictures.

Beautiful, interesting

Beautiful, interesting, fun pictures I'd love to color with my Copic Sketch Markers. However they make the unthinking mistake of printing on both sides of the paper so you can only color one page and the other is ruined due to bleed through. I have the entire Prismacolor colored pencil set, plus sets by Derwent. Some pictures lend themselves to colored pencils, but some pictures have too much white space, outlines that are too dark to work with pencils, etc. This line of coloring books fall into that category. It would take a lifetime to complete with colored pencils and the outlines are so dark it would just eat up your pencils and not have the quality a sketch marker would produce. Would be a great series, love the pictures, but hate to lose half off the book because the author couldn't print on one side of paper only.

A classic translation but it still works

I am puzzled by the book's Amazon description as the Soncino Talmud that I study from doesn't have any pictures and currently it's not even talking about the Temple. But I will review the Soncino Talmud in hopes that AMazon got it wrong...
While the Artscroll and Steinsaltz translations have eclipsed Soncino, this is still one of the most valuable translations out there. While Artscroll takes great pains to describe the background of every argument, while Steinsaltz goes even farther in that direction, this edition gives the straight translation with a few notes for clarification. Some of the notes are for scholars while other notes are for anyone (such as defining Havdalah).
In many ways these books are better for a beginning than either Artscroll or Steinsaltz, because although they don't explain every detail, they also don't bog down the casual reader with these details. You can go through several pages and feel like you've accomplished something. You might not get the depth of Artscroll but you've certainly gotten the knowledge. Also, unlike Artscroll, an entire tractate can fit into one volume. The average Artscroll book has between 30-50 pages of the Talmud while these books can fit 90-110 pages. This is not only easier on the bookshelves but also on the pocketbook.
I would recommend this set as the first set and then move on to either Artscroll or Steinsaltz when re-examining and studying the texts. And as with the Talmud always, you need to study it with someone else.

The standard, traditional text with facing translation.

The traditional pagination of the Vilna (first printed) edition of the Talmud (including Rashi and Tosafot) is preserved, but with the addition of a superb literal translation facing each page. This Talmud is excellent for the uninitiated, english only reader, someone with a basic Hebrew-Aramaic vocabulary, or even the more advanced learner who needs little help with the traditional text. It also includes a comprehensive index of terms and personalities. Worthwhile for your Jewish bookshelf.

Its English is the best of all translations

The previous reviews have indicated that this translation is superb. I believe the quality of the English in this translation has never been matched. But as has been pointed out this work does not contain as extensive commentary as Artscroll and Steinsaltz. Perhaps this means as one reader suggested that it is possible to read through several pages more easily than with other translations. But my experience is , and I am not the greatest learner in the world, that Talmud truly does require for most group study, or study with a havruta. 'Reading it' is not really understanding it. This is very complicated and difficult material .

This book can do you a world of good

I own a good amount of "unorthodox" exercise manuals. I have ordered books that turned out to be, literally, xeroxed copies of old training manuals bound together in cheap plastic folders that a high school student might use, and marketed as "lost secrets of blah blah blah". So between my past experiences and some of the negative reviews on here about this book, I didn't know what to expect. What I got was a nice looking, thick book packed full of information. I am a former personal trainer and it used to blow my mind how uninformed people are about bodyweight exercise. This book delivers the exact same message that I used to try to drill into my clients heads, and that is: YOU ABSOLUTELY DO NOT NEED ANYTHING BUT YOUR OWN BODY IN ORDER TO WORK OUT!!! I can't stand it when people tell me "I'm fat and/or out of shape because I can't make it over to the gym". Let me make this very clear, wherever you are sitting/standing right now, you can do a hardcore work out that will leave your limbs trembling and have you dripping with sweat. If you keep at it, your body will adapt to whatever it is that you are doing, which means your fitness levels will have gone up! This book will show you what to do. One of the complaints I've read about the book is that it is not put together well and there is no program or regimen to follow. I don't know what book that person was reading, because it's all in there. Sure, after a few months of doing the basics you may want to (god forbid) think for yourself and maybe use a little inventiveness to make your workouts more challenging, but is that a bad thing? My only real complaint about the book is the model Bronson chose to use to demonstrate the exercises. Bronson obviously had some limitations on what he could do with the book from inside a prison cell, and one of those limitations was being able to take some proper pictures of himself. The model he used looks like a blonde female version of Lou Ferrigno in an American Gladiators outfit, which is not exactly inspiring to me.
So to sum it all up, if you want to know how to get into great shape without buying any equipment or going to the gym, get this book, you honestly shouldn't need anything else.

The only fitness book you'll need.

When I first found out about Charles Bronson, I was blown away. He single-handedly shut down a prison after taking a news reporter 'hostage' just to mess with everyone and show how bad of a dude he was. He punched through a sheet of bulletproof glass. He held numerous records for push ups and sit ups. He has the title of 'most dangerous criminal in England', and here the guy's never killed anyone! But it's easy to see why the guy's so dangerous- he's more fit than most professional body builders, and he doesn't even have regular access to a gym or healthy foods. And yet, the guy went and wrote this book, and is letting us in on his secrets on how he did it. As far as I'm concerned, he's the man for that alone. I got this book to see what it is he all does, and to try it out for myself. Keep in mind that I'm not some kind of exercise maniac, though I do try and do 300 push ups, sit ups and leg lifts a night at the very least. But after doing just -one- of the Solitary rounds, I was sweating and my muscles felt hard for a good hour or two after I was done!

Solitary Fitness has tons of great information before and after the actual Solitary Fitness program. Bronson (who sometimes refers to himself as Bronco) tells you what stretches are important, how many of them to do and for how long. I know that stretching is important before working out, and I spend at least 20 minutes doing stretches before I lift weights or go over my martial arts move set, but some people don't get it, and Bronson drills it in your head how important they are. He then goes over how to work on specific muscles and single them out, which you'll be able to do quickly thanks to his instructions. The majority of exercises here involve stretching and resistance. At first, they might sound stupid because you can't imagine these getting you ripped, but they're there to prepare you for the bigger ones later on. And at the same time, this book isn't meant to get you looking like Arnie, who Bronson likes to pick on a lot here. No, Solitary Fitness is about changing your life style and getting you prepared for anything once you're fit. And because nearly every single muscle is covered in this book (even the muscles within your rear, and those in your genitals), you -will- be ready for anything. Bronson is a very educated man when it comes to fitness, and it shows just a few pages into the program here. He knows what he's talking about, from what each muscle does to what foods are best for you and why.

Some complain about how unorganized the book is, then try to use Bronson's status as 'just a criminal' as the excuse for that. He's not trying to make a professional exercise book. Bronson's writing style is good because you feel like he's actually talking to you directly, and not just listing steps and letting you figure the rest out with the pictures. I didn't find the book unorganized, though Bronson himself even makes fun here and there, saying that he should've put something in a section a few dozen pages before. But this print of the book, the one pictured here on Amazon, does have a few problems with the organization, and that's the publisher's fault for overlooking it. Some parts tell you to refer to the picture or chart below/above, when sometimes it's on the previous page, or you have to turn the page to see it. 'not Bronson's fault, but they should've caught this and fixed it just to help things out. Also, I've seen the first edition of this book, and it had better quality photos. In this print, they're VERY dark and sometimes it's hard to make out the muscle definition in the models. 'not a big deal, but if you can find the first version, go for that one. His great drawings look good still, and these help show you how to do some of the exercises as well, though they're also comical of course.

I've spent a lot of years lifting weights here and there, have 12 years of martial arts experience, and like to work out in my free time, but Solitary Fitness seems to be my calling for getting a harder, tougher body. You can do these exercises anywhere, anytime. The only things you'll need for some are things like a towel, cement block or a chair. And get this- a good portion of the book's opening is praise from several well-known athletes and sports figures. A champion boxer noted that when he said his inspiration was Bronson, that got edited from tv. Why? Because he's a criminal? The fact that Bronson's program reached a professional boxer shows you that this is the real deal. Get this book before it goes out of print again and share it with your friends. You won't be disappointed. I mean, there's a section called 'Solitary Cow Punch' for crying out loud. Don't you want to learn how to throw a punch strong enough to knock out a cow!?
