And yet, fifty years after the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism was formed and with over forty years of federal government funding and supports for second-language education, relatively few English Canadians speak or choose to speak French. Historian Matthew Hayday explores the various ways in which bilingualism was promoted to English-speaking Canadians from the 1960s to the late 1990s. He analyzes the strategies and tactics employed by organizations on both sides of the bilingualism debate. Against a dramatic background of constitutional changes and controversies, economic turmoil, demographic shifts, and the on-again, off-again possibility of Quebec separatism, English-speaking Canadians had to respond to the bilingualism issue and face the decision of whether they and their children should learn French.

About the Author
Clive Cussler is the author of more than fifty books in five bestselling series, including Dirk Pitt, NUMA Files, Oregon Files, Isaac Bell, and Fargo. His life nearly parallels that of his hero Dirk Pitt. Whether searching for lost aircraft or leading expeditions to find famous shipwrecks, he and his NUMA crew of volunteers have discovered more than seventy-five lost ships of historic significance, including the long-lost Confederate submarine "Hunley," which was raised in 2000 with much press publicity. One Of The Best In The Isaac Bell Series

Set in 1911, Van Dorn lead detective Isaac Bell is hired to find Anna Pape, a young woman who's ran away to become an actress. Disturbed when Anna turns up murdered, Isaac now must find Anna's killer. But that won't be an easy job, for other young women besides Anna are being murdered. Not only do the women resemble one another, the killer has left distinct marks in each victim. As Isaac and the rest of the Van Dorn detectives begin working on the case, a disturbing fact is uncovered; these murders are remarkably similar to the Jack The Ripper killings in London.

Now, Isaac travels to London to pursue his hunch, while in America, a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde play travels across the country. It's possible that the killings of the young actresses might lie with this play troupe. To make matters even more difficult for Isaac, his wife, Marion Morgan Bell, has proposed making the Jekyll and Hyde play into a movie, thus putting herself in danger. "The Cutthroat" promises to be Isaac Bell's greatest case yet.

I've read all of the Isaac Bell series, and have enjoyed each one. I especially like the time period setting for each novel. As with the previous books in this series, this story is very exciting and builds in intensity throughout while leaving the reader to guess who the "bad guy" is until the very end. The characters have become old friends, many of whom have appeared in each of the previous books in the series. I'm a big fan of Isaac Bell as well as Cussler's other characters and I'm anticipating the next Isaac Bell adventure. Highly recommended.

"The Cutthroat" Fun, Action-Adventure in Clean, Plain English Suitable for Most Any Audience

This is written in plain English and is the sort of book you can share with your prayer group. The only cuss word I noted was the d-word. Therefore, if this was a film I expect it would be rated G.

I suspect this most of the writing in this was by Justin Scott. This is not a bad thing, but, unfortunately, I and many others probably opted to spend 15 bucks on it because of the Cussler brand and in knowing that we've bought all or most of the previous nine Isaac Bell adventures. Had it not given top billing to Cussler, I probably would have passed on the purchase. Especially because the time period just after the turn of the century and just preceding World War One is, for me, rather blase.

Passing up the purchase based on my prejudice, however, would have been a mistake. The prologue grabbed me with a sense of curiosity and its humor. Following the prologue, chapter one confirmed that this Action-Adventure would have plenty of humor and would not be blase.

At 407 pages, I found this a relatively fast read. In part due to the humor, suspense, and the page-turner hooks at the end of each chapter. Indeed, next month I will add the 9 hours, 21 minute Audible version to my library, of course.

Bottom Line

Four stars out of five. Explaining why I am rating it less than five stars would necessitate a spoiler, which I am loathe to do on purpose. At any rate, this is a clean, fun Action-Adventure that most anybody can enjoy. Unlike so many in its genre, it doesn't take itself too seriously.

Not as Entertaining as Past Isaac Bell books.

I have read all of Justin Scott's Isaac Bell books. I find the time period they are set in to be fascinating. Past topics have had some historical significance. Thoroughly enjoyed all of them - until this last one While the "Cutthroat" was OK , it was not captivating. I believe the "Jack the Ripper" subject turned me off. A good read. Not a great read. I am hoping for a better, more creative read next year. Yes, I will buy one more.

About the Author
Mary Lou Roberts has been a tenured professor of marketing at the University of Massachusetts and held a number of administrative positions there including Director of Development. She currently teaches Internet Marketing to a global cadre of students at the Harvard University Extension School. Her Ph.D. in marketing is from the University of Michigan. She is senior author of Direct Marketing Management, 2e, available on her website www.marylouroberts.info. She has published extensively in marketing journals in the U.S. and Europe. Dr. Roberts is a frequent presenter on programs of both professional and academic marketing organizations, and has consulted and provided planning services and management training programs for a wide variety of corporations and non-profit organizations. She has been an active member of many professional organizations and has served on a number of their boards.

Debra Zahay is Professor and Department Chair at St. Edward's University. Austin, Texas. She holds A Ph.D. in Marketing from the University of Illinois, an M.A. in Management from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, a J.D. from Loyola University in Chicago and her undergraduate degree from Washington University in St. Louis. Dr. Zahay researches how firms can facilitate customer relationships, particularly using customer information. Her current and recent research topics include customer information management for competitive advantage; information use in new product development and, particularly, crowd-sourcing; data warehousing in CRM environments; email personalization and other aspects of interactive marketing. Some of the journals in which she has published include Journal of Product Innovation Management, Decision Sciences, Industrial Marketing Management, Journal of Advertising Research, Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing, Journal of Interactive Marketing, Interactive Marketing, Journal of Database Marketing, and in the working paper series for the Marketing Science Institute. She has presented her work at numerous academic and practitioner conferences. Dr. Zahay's prior teaching experiences include North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina, and DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Zahay has been the President of her own database and relationship management consulting firm since 1993 and has extensive experience helping companies identify and develop customer relationships. Her prior business experience includes senior marketing management responsibilities at MCI Telecommunications and Dun & Bradstreet. She has also served as a Vice President on the Executive Board of the Chicago American Marketing Association and currently serves on the Board of the Chicago Association of Direct Marketing.

Poorly written. This book contains a wealth of info, unfortunately it could use a lot of editing

If you are an instructor considering this text, please keep looking. The book is somewhat dated, but it's real problem is a lack of editing. There are random factoids scattered in with useful text which makes many passages unnecessarily confusing. For example: Does it really matter whether Jerry Yang was rumored to have been forced out of Yahoo? That is the sort of detail that is somewhat randomly included. The authors obviously know a lot about the early days of the internet, but that doesn't make all that information relevant to internet marketing.

Also, don't be confused by the "Kindle" Edition. This is not a Kindle book but what's called a "print replica" which means most eBook features are not available - very frustrating for a book about the internet. One would hope that for a $50 "Kindle" book the publisher could have taken the time to actually convert the book into a true e-Book format. Even a PDF version would have been more useful than this print replica version.

Worth the wait!

The second book "Fall" was just as entertaining and exciting as the first "Keep". Not knowing what happened to key players at the end was a little disappointing. I love to read and will definitely purchase the third book "Avenge" Dec 21st , when it's released. So far I love this series and will continue supporting this author.

Sweet story.

The love story between Sorin and Esther was tender, touching, and sweetly written. But the author could have lengthened the story by showing greater character development, and showing us more about Sorin's mob life. It was a bit unrealistic that he spent a majority of his time chasing behind Esther. And speaking of Esther, can we get a better description of her besides her breast, thighs, and calves? What style or color hair does she have? Not once is there a mention of Sorin even touching her hair. Anyway, it was a decent read, but needed better development.

This book was even better than Book 1 in the series, and that was a good book! Sexy, funny, suspenseful. Loved it. I felt like I was watching a movie that's how great Kaye Blue's writing was. Looking forward to Books 3 and 4. Keep'em coming Kaye!!!

A coherent and comprehensive introduction to the design of microwave links

As frequency increases and wavelength decreases, practical antennas get more and more directive and most of the transmitted power is confined to a progressively narrowing beam. Very high capacity (orver 1,000 telephone channels) links may be established at frequencies above about 1 GHz given the large bandwidth available. The absence of a physical connection together with the very high capacity of such high frequency links make microwave radio relay links an attractive alternative to fiber optic cables in many situations. The ongoing revolution in the telecommunications sector and the advances in technology have brought microwave links to center stage. They are becoming increasingly popular, not only to interconnect base stations for cellular radio, but also as a means to offer fixed broadband access to the end user.

Analog and Digital Microwave Links: From Theory to Design introduces the reader to the principles and the design of microwave links. Serving both as an essential textbook for upper level engineering students and as a practical reference for the practicing engineer, the book thoroughly discusses the subject of microwave links (which recently has been more widely known as Fixed Wireless Access, or FWA), from the basic concepts of free space propagation and aperture antennas, through the transmission of analog and digital signals in noisy (and fading) channels, right to the design specification and costing of links.

A complete reference book for microwave links design

I am using the first edition of this book in my Telecommunication Engineering course. The author deserves my congratulations. This book is well organized, has clear explanations and makes an efficient compilation of the ITU-R recommendations, pointing precisely the relevant aspects when necessary. The book has also a practical focus, clearly showing real world and market experience, not only laboratory developed knowledge, still keeping well balanced level of math. This second edition certainly improves the already well-done work. I recommend it.
