About the Author
Professor Conrad Lashley is Professor of Leisure Retailing at the Centre for Leisure Retailing at the Nottingham Business School. His research interests have largely been concerned with service quality management, and specifically employee empowerment in service delivery. He works closely with several major industry organizations including the British Institute of Innkeeping, J. D. Wetherspoon and McDonald's Restaurants Limited.

She has an MSc in Entrepreneurial Studies and her Ph.D. thesis investigated small firm strategic alliances. Since 1979 she has been an entrepreneur in her own right, owning and operating a number of restaurant and hotel businesses. In addition, she regularly undertakes consultancy projects for entrepreneurs both in the UK and internationally.

As the queen of the 1970s blaxploitation movies, Grier stands assured that her as-told-to autobiography will be welcomed by film-studies collections high and low. Iconic for her roles in such gems of the genre as Coffy and Foxy Brown, Grier has also appeared in mainstream films, the likes of Fort Apache the Bronx and Mars Attacks. Her blaxploitation efforts were made on shoestring budgets without much time for rehearsal or nuance, but when given a much meatier role—the title character in Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown—she turned in a spectacular performance (unfortunately, that excellent film was overlooked in the wake of Tarantino’s signature work, Pulp Fiction). Grier describes making the low-budget films, in which she often portrayed a tough but beautiful woman involved in a ludicrous plot, and also such noncommercial events as her 1974 night out with John Lennon, Harry Nilsson, and Peter Lawford, during which she was ejected from the Troubadour, an “in” spot at the time, though at least in the company of pop-culture royalty. --Mike Tribby

About the Author
Pam Grier started her career in the early 1970s, starring in a string of moderately successful women-in-prison films and blaxploitation films, and has generally remained in the public eye, starring in movies such as Coffy, Foxy Brown, and Jackie Brown.

After taking a short break from Hollywood, Pam returned to films in the 80s, like Fort Apache the Bronx, Something Wicked this Way Comes, and Above the Law. She also made a guest appearances on Miami Vice and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

Pam also played Kit Porter on the controversial hit show "The L Word" on Showtime. She occasionally guest-stars in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, where she plays a recurring character. She spends her free time on her ranch in Colorado.

They Call Her Foxy

I became a fan of Pam Grier's movies as a teenager in the 1970's. I was old enough to see R-Rated movies and I was fascinated by a female militant type actress. My friends and I spent many Saturdays watching her movies then coming home and talking about how `bad' she was. My friends even called me `Coffy' due to our shared height, slight tooth gap, brown skin and yards of curly hair. So, of course, I was delighted to be asked to review her memoir. FOXY: My Life in Three Acts.

I absolutely enjoyed the honest, `talky' way in which Ms. Grier wrote her memoirs. The first act focused on her childhood and the relationships she had with the people in her life. Particularly influential, was the work ethic and strength of her mother, and the fiery, fighting spirit of her aunt, Mennon. I could literally visualize Pam's mother working on a degree in nursing and purchasing a home while her father was a way in the Air Force. This act also covered the molestation Pam suffered at age six by her cousins. I could feel her pain wafting from the pages but also she made it clear why she never told anyone. It really brought out how the act of molestation is not `new' and that children should be able to tell someone.

Act Two discusses her life as young adult and her work ethic and how she became an actress. Also discussed are her relationship with Kareem Abdul Jabar and how his becoming a member of the Nation of Islam came between them. She also had relationships with Freddie Prinze Jr. and Richard Prior that ended due to their drug usage. Grier was very honest about her relationships without being salacious or telling every dirty detail. I really admired that component of the book. It proved it is not necessary to drag anyone through the mud to tell your story.
The Final Act discusses the actress' battle with cancer and how she continued to take her life into her own hands and never allow anyone to tell her how to live. She wrote with honesty, expressing little regret for the life she lived. More importantly, she painted herself as more than an actress, but as a well-rounded woman. I recommend this memoir to all who love memoirs and biographies that allow them to see inside famous people they thought they knew.

Foxy is dynamite !!!

I read this book in record time. Ms. Grier shares her life in an entertaining and easy to understand way. I had the pleasure to see her in Newark, N.J. at a film festival several years ago. After a screening of Friday Foster, she spoke for a while and I was mesmerized. My son was able to get on the stage and she hugged him and signed a photo for him which made a proud kid. She was so nice to him and I really appreciated that.

The book gives the good and bad and she seems to be very honest about it. I am very happy that she is healthy and getting ready to make a new movie with Julia Roberts.
Buy this book and you will not be disappointed. You will not put it down.

I am going to put Coffy in my DVD machine now and get a flashback to my younger days.

the greatest illustrated book of ethiopian sacred art

Ethiopia has one of the most unique and fascinating cultural histories in the world. Due to the isolation stemming from its high mountains and plateaus as well as by the advancing Moslem armies from 500 to 1500 AD, Ethiopia might be termed the Tibet of Africa. However in this case it is Christianity rather than Buddhism which became the binding force of its people. As a result, its art has a pronounced individuality in treating Christian themes and icons. But they possess an unworldly and overwhelming impact in their beauty and artistic integrity. The many color photos show the church painting, bronzework and book illustrations from 1200 to 1800 so the reader gets a vivid conception of the progression of style across the centuries. An essential book!

This wall poster is great in using visuals to help children learn the sounds in the English language. They are great reminders that the children can use throughout the school day. I love the graphics and helping the children with the motions. Delivery and price were of good quality and I would not have a problem recommending the product and vendor to others.

Jolly Frieze Can Be Used For Flash Cards

I love the Jolly program, and using this frieze along with the book makes it easy to teach. I cut out the individual sounds, laminate them, and use them as flash cards to teach my Kindergarten students. When students learn from the very beginning that a makes the sound that is in ant and ai makes the long a sound it helps them to distinguish between the letter's name and the letter's sound. Later they will learn that a can also say the long sound if it is an open syllable.

Great for early literacy

The school my son will attend teaches Jolly phonics and I've been using it myself in conjunction with programs from the Neuhaus Edication Center for years. I LOVE jolly phonics and am excited to have this wall frieze be a part of my home decor.

"RAVENS" - A Nail-Biting Psychological Thriller! Not To Be Missed!!!!

Shaw McBride and Romeo Zderko have been "friends" since they were in fifth grade, back in Ohio. Romeo was a sensitive kid and very needy. He desperately wanted to fit in, especially with the seemingly popular Shaw and his "club." Club members had carved the letter "D" on their chests and rubbed gunpowder into the wounds to keep the mark from fading. Romeo was really impressed at the brotherly solidarity this represented to him. He approached Shaw and asked to join the club. Obviously the boys laughed and made fun of the loser. Soon afterwards, however, Shaw came up to the boy and asked, "Suppose there was a club. What would you be willing to do to get in?" When Romeo replied, "Anything," Shaw acquired an"apostle." This was probably the first time the budding psychopath got a real taste for how good it felt to dominate and control.

Fast-forward twenty-some years - both Shaw and Romeo have left their their "zombie jobs" in tech-support at Dayton Techworld. They hit the road in Romeo's '91 Tercel and plan to drive to Key West, sell the vehicle, hire out on fishing boats, and work their way to Trinidad, never to return. As far-out as this idea sounds, it is mild compared to the grandiose schemes Shawn will come up with over the course of the novel. And, naturally, Romeo will be manipulated into going along with every one of them. As the duo hits southern Georgia, the car's front tire begins to leak. They pull-off I-95 and stop at a convenience store to borrow a tire gauge and get something cold to drink. It is here they learn that a local family just won $318,000,000. in the MAX A MILLION JACKPOT!! And the winning ticket was bought at this very convenience store the day before! Shaw is filled with rage when he hears the news. "Three hundred and eighteen million dollars thrown away on a family of South Georgia nothings!!"

The two men rent a room in a nearby motel. Shaw surfs the Net. The only information he was able to glean about the winners is that the husband/father owns a copier store in Brunswick, GA. With the help of Yellowbook and Google, he finds the family's name and whereabouts. Mitch and Patsy Boatwright, their twenty-two year-old daughter Tara, and Jase, their eight year-old son, are about to regret their big win big time!

Patsy Boatwright is addicted to gin and tonics and buying lottery tickets. Tara stays away from home on Wednesday nights when the jackpot is announced. Naturally her mother always comes up with the wrong numbers. I mean, what are the odds?? Patsy becomes surly in her disappointment and always picks a fight. But last night's jackpot announcement was extremely different from the thousands which preceded it. Patsy won!! The family is told to keep the news a secret, for their own security, until an announcement is formally made - but big-mouth Jase tells his 3rd grade classmates. Bad luck! While the family giddily makes plans to spend their fortune, McBride and Zderko make plans of a different nature. The increasingly manic Shaw concocts a money-making scheme to get half the winnings. Romeo is bewildered. But his friend informs him that they have the opportunity to change, not only their lives, but the world. Shaw tell Romeo, "I need you to play a kind of role. Like what you'd call an "angel of vengeance."

Shaw calls upon the Boatwrights, posing as a member of the Georgia Lottery Commission. When Mitch Boatwright asks the man to leave, Shaw pulls a gun and threatens to kill them all if they don't cooperate. He tells the family, "If you oppose us in any way, I'll kill the people you love" And where is Romeo? He has been assigned the task of driving around Brunswick, "the Wick," surveilling the Boatwright's family members and friends, from a local map on which Shaw has targeted points of interests. He and Shaw will communicate at specific times by cell phone and if Shaw is in trouble, or if he doesn't answer the phone, Romeo is to proceed to kill everyone on the list. He is Shaw's "enforcer," his "dark servant." Although Romeo is a kind-hearted, compassionate man, which he demonstrates again and again throughout "Ravens," he is , simply, not the brightest bulb in the box. And, he is unable to say "no" to Shaw, his best buddie. There was only one time when he "lost it," to protect his friend, but that was years ago and he has never repeated his violent actions since.

Shaw invents, with the help of the family he holds hostage, what seems to be a plausible story for claiming half of the winnings. They are all terrified into compliance. The family must be kept in constant fear, for themselves and their loved ones, if the plan is to work. Under so much pressure, all involved are close to snapping, especially Romeo, still driving in circles around the town. He cannot work up the anger to kill anyone and is definitely not a cold-blooded murderer. He would rather die, however, than have Shaw call him a coward and a traitor. He is the "cudgel that Shaw McBride is using to terrorize the Boatwrights.

"Ravens" is a taut psychological thriller. George Dawes Green is a master at building tension. I noticed that I was biting my nails about half-way through the book. Just as the reader thinks everything is about to blow-up, the author lifts his foot from the pedal, slightly...then he steps on the gas again. I was riveted by the original storyline and the well developed characters - some of whom are Really characters, especially Nell, the grandmother. There is humor here also, some much needed comic relief. The dialogue is excellent, especially the "texting" language used between Tara and her best friend.

This is Mr. Green's third novel. His first "The Caveman's Valentine," published in 1994, won an Edgar Award for Best First Novel. "The Juror" was an instant NY Times bestseller and was made into a movie starring Demi Moore and Alec Baldwin. After using New York City as the setting for his first two books, the author returns to his Southern roots with this new work. I highly recommend this edge-of-the-seat thriller!
