About the Author
STEPHEN COYLE, AIA, LEED AP, founder and principal of Town-Green [www.town-green.com] based in Oakland, California, and cofounder of the National Charrette Institute [www.charretteinstitute.org] and Townworks/DPZ [www.townworks.org], is an architect, urbanist, and community planner. Coyle and his colleagues design and repair landscapes, buildings, neighborhoods, and cities throughout the United States and Southeast Asia. As co-designer of the award-winning Contra Costa Centre Transit Village, Coyle developed sustainability plans for Hayward, Gilroy, Martinez, Napa, Pleasanton, and Tracy, California. With Bill Lennertz, Coyle helped to "green" Portland and other Oregon communities through New Urbanist plans and form-based codes.

DANIEL DUNIGAN, AICP, LEED AP, closely collaborated with Steve Coyle on the creation of this book. This should be the manual for sustainability planning

Having embarked on a sustainability plan without the aid or foresight of any type of guidebook or comprehensive strategy, I am extremely supportive of the effort that author Stephen Coyle has undertaken in compiling Sustainable and Resilient Communities. This book should be the "Read Me!" document for anyone looking to engage in sustainability planning efforts from a government or community perspective. It's not the first book that I've read on how to engage in sustainability efforts (honestly such titles are beginning to become "a dime a dozen"), but it is the first book that focuses on how to create an action plan to make a community more sustainable (rather than simply focusing on successful efforts in other areas). Coyle manages to provide realistic strategies that can easily be worked into the political context of almost any community without crossing into the fringe of developing technologies or antiquated reductionist themes.

Sustainable and Resilient Communities is broken down into 13 chapters which address the various facets of sustainability. The chapters are:
1. The Built Environments and Its Supporting Systems
2. The Process of Transformation
3. The Physical Built Environment
4. The Regulatory Environment
5. Transportation
6. Energy
7. Water
8. Natural Environment
9. Food Production/Agriculture
10. Solid Waste
11. Economics
12. Engagement and Education

The first two chapters provide a solid assessment of the sustainability planning process and offer a prescriptive framework for how it can be implemented within a community. Chapter 2 also provides a robust breakdown of the process showing how to assemble potential stakeholders, how to effectively use those stakeholders, how to gain support from a broad segment of the community, and how to successfully implement a sustainability plan. The remaining chapters break down each of the specialty topics and provide case studies that demonstrate how the topics were successfully tackled.

Sustainable and Resilient Communities is a 404 page manual on how to create a sustainability plan. This is the manual that you should pass around your organization or civic group to learn how to manage the process and how to build support. I found it to be well-written and filled with a wealth of information. Coyle has done a superb job of assembling a group of experts well-versed in the subject matter presented. It doesn't take a singular or rigid approach to building a sustainability plan but instead shows how communities can create objectives that meet the needs of their citizens.

I found the book to be well illustrated with rational and relevant examples. The graphics and detailed examples from municipalities around the country are extremely useful in brainstorming approaches. The graphics are also appropriately placed to make the topics at hand more cogent. The book opens with a Foreword from Andr�s Duany and continues with poignant articles by renowned experts in their respective fields.

If you're interested in sustainability plans or sustainability action plans or just creating sustainability indicators for your organization this book is an excellent place to start. It's targeted to those involved with government organization, but it's a good tool in the hands of a community activists or civic group. It would also be an excellent manual for organizations looking to approach sustainability internally.

Too much Red Tape to be green

This is, like most books "built by committee," very much a hit or miss affair. The chapters dealing with waste and transportation were pretty good. I found the other chapters to be pretty lackluster. Too much of the book focuses not on practical steps to be taken to make communities "greener," but to the mechanisms of legal and municipal wrangling surrounding how to get authorization to proceed with green programs.

These sort of tedious details do need to be hammered out in order to acquire authorizations in most communities before one can go through with the kinds of plans outlined in this book, but too much of the text is taken up with this kind of minutiae. Conversely, other portions of the book are too vague and general. Rather than giving specific details on how to plan for certain systems/modes of going green, all we as the public get are recommendations for software programs to download that should help with the task, some of which are prohibitively expensive.

There are some good sections in this book, but for the most part I found it to be a rough, uneven and unrewarding slog. There has to be a better book (or books on the subject). Not recommended for the general reader, although those who already possess some specialized knowledge may find it rewarding.

One of his examples of a focally engineered structure is the Golden Gate Bridge, which “draws people to it, enlivens and elevates the human spirit, and resonates with the world of its congenial setting. Humans, bridge, and world are in tune.” These values of engagement, enlivenment, and resonance are key to the normative approach Moriarty brings to the profession of engineering, which traditionally has focused mainly on technical measures of evaluation such as efficiency, productivity, objectivity, and precision. These measures, while important, look at the engineered product in a local and limited sense. But “from a broader perspective, what is locally benign may present serious moral problems,” undermining “social justice, environmental sustainability, and health and safety of affected parties.” It is this broader perspective that is championed by focal engineering, the subject of Part III of the book, which Moriarty contrasts with “modern” engineering in Part I and “pre-modern” engineering in Part II.

Getting the ratio right

According to Moriarty, technology is promising. Those who thought that engineering is building stuff learn that actually it is "the practice of making good on the promise of technology" (1). Some technology disburdens but disengages. Some technology colonizes without contextualizing. The trick, "focal engineering" is to get the right proportion of each. But how?

Usually the subject of getting the proportions of values right is called ethics, a branch of philosophy. Philosophy is argumentative. What is right is what has the best arguments behind it. These days there is no true and complete picture of the way the world is (Putnam). One wonders whether Moriarty thinks he has a true and complete picture of what resonates with the lifeworld. For example, there is no question for him that the golden gate bridge simply resonates. (I for one had never thought about the bridge--so how can it resonate for me?).

Much goes unanswered in Moriarty. Moriarty is obviously concerned with the relationship between ethics and engineering. But, what is this relationship? He offers too many candidates. At one point it looks like he favors environmental sustainability, social justice, and safety as obvious and incontrovertible values in themselves. Kant, utilitarianism and the like are useful heuristic tools brought out to assist in applying the fundamental values. But, later, the book appeals to virtue ethics and Hegelian ethics. Will Moriarty's real ethical position please stand up?

I am not very fond of creative definitions of terms. I think that philosophy should be above all clear. It should make arguments clear. There is no need to couch them within terminology and phraseology. It is difficult to see how the book coheres. For example, why does it talk about the history of engineering? What does the history of engineering have to do with focal engineering? What does ethics have to do with focal engineering? What is the lifeworld anyway? (as opposed to the deadworld?)

I recommend this book as a valiant attempt by a contemporary engineer to bring Borgmann, Hegel and others to bear on current professional ethics. It is an ambitious attempt, but unfortunately, I believe it falls short of being finished or even that functional as a textbook. It may violate its own promises.

About the Author
Mark Q. Sutton began his career in anthropology in 1968.� While still in high school, he took advantage of the opportunity to participate in archaeological excavations conducted by the local Community College. He went on to earn a BA (1972), an MA (1977), and a Ph.D (1987) in anthropology.� He has worked as an archaeologist for the US Air Force, the US Bureau of Land Management, various private consulting firms, and taught at a number of community colleges and universities.� He taught at California State University, Bakersfield from 1987 to 2007 where he retired as Emeritus Professor of Anthropology.� He now works for Statistical Research, Inc. in San Diego.� Dr. Sutton works on understanding hunter-gatherer adaptations to arid environments but has also investigated entomophagy, prehistoric diet and technology, and optimal foraging theory.� Dr. Sutton has worked at more than 120 sites in North America and has published over 160 books, monographs, and papers on archaeology and anthropology.

Preface One of the major goals of this fourth edition was to reorganize and expand the chapter on Contemporary Issues, add some new photos, to correct errors, and to update all of the other materials in the book, particularly the sections on prehistory. The recently published A Prehistory of North America (Sutton 2010) is also organized by culture area and can serve as a companion volume to this edition of Native North America. A very dry listing of the various aspects of indians in different areas of North America. It could almost be a large chart comparing the similarities of the indian practices, etc. So far (four chapters) it turns out that the indian's anthropology practices are more alike than different.

Birmingham Alabama was a key location in the Civil Rights Movement. This book covers a time when issues came to a head. There were nation changing events occurring in Birmingham that were heard by, and affected, the entire country.

Good Intro with Some Advanced Topics

I've been using PHPUnit for a while, so I didn't need the fundamentals, but they were all here for those just starting. A number of advanced topics and uses were brought up or covered too. It is just a pocket guide so set expectations accordingly. But it's a detailed primer on both basic and advanced uses.

Saved My Life! Best Book I've EVER Read on Fasting & Diet!!!

I was poisoned by the birth control shot depo provera. Immediately falling sick with symptoms I went back to the doctor. She told me no way was it the shot that was making me sick. She was concerned there was something wrong in my brain and from there I ended up at two different neurologists, a chiropractor, many nurse practitions, an ear nose and throat doctor and on and on. I was eventually diagnosed with fibromyalgia. (...)
No doctor could cure me. They all gave me various drugs, which I took willing.. (foolish me!!) but not one of them cured me. They only further POISONED MY SYSTEM!
I was cured by one thing and one thing only! FASTING AND A MUCUS FREE DIET! I have researched fasting and diet for healing purposes extensively. My stack of books on the subjects stacks waist high. This is by far, hands down, the book I recommend the highest.
If you've read Fast Your Way To Health and/or The Miracle of Fasting, this one is even better!! A+++

Timeless Information to Make You Healthy

Prof. Ehret's ideas and methods can change your life and unleash a tsunami of energy from within you. But they're not easy.

It has taken me years to ease into and then finally enjoy a healthy lifestyle. And it's been disappointing to see how difficult it is for some of my friends and family to end their poor eating habits and change their lifestyle.

I wouldn't consider this book as a "starting guide." It's more for people who are already committed to changing their lifestyle. The author's ideas are as undiluted as his politically incorrect worldview. To be fair, he died nearly 90 years ago and was unrestrained by the social pressures of our current hyper-sensitive society.

For a short book, he covers a lot of ground, including acidic and alkalizing foods, transitioning to a healthy diet and fasting.

The transition diet he espouses is extremely important because Ehret's idea of fasting isn't today's MTV-type weekend cleanse. His idea of a fast is more of the biblical kind - 40 days or so.

One caveat - when you do begin to change your lifestyle, it's best to use a product to make sure you get all of the nutrients you need at the beginning. If not, your "cleansing crisis" could be so severe that you'd simply abandon your goals. Even when starting on a simple juicing regime, it's best to take it slowly at the outset.

In summary, I think this is a great book with proven concepts that will work for you. But just realize the guy's hard-core. Take it easy in the beginning and build on your successes and stay with it. It's definitely worth it.

Every modern man and woman should try this ...

I've had rumathoid arthritis for 15 years and the ONLY "treatment" with positive results was this diet of Ehret. No more pain killers, no more acne (thanks to cortisone etc.) no more depression and NO pain or swelling. All allergies disappeared and I can eat almost anything in moderation. Had candida (chronic) - this also disappeared after the fast and never returned thanks to this MUCUSLESS DIET of Ehret. I don't miss any animal proteins in my diet and have no cravings! My husband and daughter loves this diet - they feel so clean! Read the book - it will make all the difference!
